| The Story Behind The Film It's in 1968 that with a group of friends who decided to put their money together, Romero started the making of a film called "Night Of The Flesh Eaters", which was later renamed "Night Of The Living-Dead" by its producer. Shot with a very low budget ($100,000) near Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, it opened new doors in visual representation of violence and faced immediate controversy upon releasing. Flesh Eating Zombies From the start, Romero and his friend John Russo were determined to break an unwritten law about cinema in those times: what you could show. A lot of the material they had written was judged to be over the line and they were often advised to withdraw it. Romero remained firm and kept the visual violence of blood and gore, without restraint, bringing the horror genre to a new level of intensity. |
"The moment we tried to get distribution everyone tried to convice us to take out alot of material, change the ending and the usual things from distributors and people that want to distribute a film for the purpose of making money. But we stuck to it and we finally got a distributor who ripped us off but showed the movie. " George A. Romero When Conflict Arises Yet one shouldn't be mistaken about NOLD, which is not a scriptless movie only relying on its graphic violence. The undead pounding on the doors of the house where the protagonists have taken shelter only adds an increasing sense of terror, while the real tension explodes when conflict arises among the survivors. Facing the worst danger, each of the character unveils his nature before an uncommon but logical ending. |
